diy coolerdor

Building a Coolerdor

My old 20 cigar humidor wasn’t cutting it anymore. In order to get the really good deals you have to order boxes. To that end I built a coolerdoor. There are instructions in a bunch of places online, so I won’t bore you with the details.

Here’s an overview of what I used.

  • Cheap cooler $19 for a 39qt (unfortunately because of the season I couldn’t get a great deal)
  • 10 boxes from CI ($20), I only used 4-5 of them and I had some for the cigars I ordered to fill it up. My understanding is having boxes helps both by putting some spanish cedar in there as well as keeping the cigars from being all exposed to the dry air when you open the cooler.
  • Hygrometer $20
  • Crystal Gel Humidification agent ( started with two small containers for $10, and I’ve added one more small one and one bigger one)

So far it seems to be doing a good job of keeping the humidy right and stays sealed well. One thing that worked out nicely for this cooler is that it doesn’t have a drain plug. I have no idea why you’d have a cooler without a drain plug, but it works better for the coolerdor.
